Coochiemudlo Island
Native Plant Nursery

~ Open Tuesday mornings 9 to 11 ~

We acknowledge the Quandamooka people, the traditional owners of the land on which our nursery is located. We pay respect to their culture and to Elders past and present.

The Nursery regularly donates plants to Bushcare, Coastcare and Indigiscapes for their revegetation and conservation work. We also sell plants to raise money and to help make our island an inviting place for native birds and animals.

 Visit to Paten Park

Seven Coochiemudlo Island Native Nursery members recently visited Paten Park Native Nursery in the Gap. It took three buses to get there but the warm welcome from volunteers and staff at Paten Park made it well worthwhile. Paten Park is a community nursery too, but it is a much bigger enterprise than we are. We had a great day and learnt a lot from their generous team.

Wattle Day

It's Wattle Day on 1 September! To celebrate, we have a few Eprapah wattles for sale ($3), a local form of the Brisbane Wattle (Acacia fimbriata).  Because these wattles bloom in July/August, the Queensland Wattle Association is encouraging residents and Councils to plant them to light up the region for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

The Eprapah or Brisbane wattle is a hardy small tree that can be pruned into a shrub or hedge.

Saving island species

As more land is cleared for housing, some of our native plants are disappearing. As far as we know, there are only two places left on the Island where Trachymene incisa (Native parsnip) still grows naturally. Nursery members collected seeds from one of these areas and have just potted up a number of trays of Trachymene. The long roots, which were a popular bush food, give the plant its common name.

It has pretty white flowers and makes an attractive garden plant. We should have some for sale at the Pirate Markets in September.

Birds, Bees and Butterflies

We have bundles of  bird, bee and butterfly attracting plants for sale.

$12 for four plants

 A few figures

Last year (2024)the Nursery donated $3723.00 worth of plants to community groups. Nursery members donated approximately $22, 933.00 worth  of volunteer hours on collecting seed and cuttings, propagating, working on our display garden, selling our plants at the markets and opshop, administration and collecting essential supplies from the mainland.
