Coochiemudlo Island
Native Plant Nursery
~ Open Tuesday mornings 9 to 11 ~

We acknowledge the Quandamooka people, the traditional owners of the land on which our nursery is located. We pay respect to their culture and to Elders past and present.
The Nursery regularly donates plants to Bushcare, Coastcare and Indigiscapes for their revegetation and conservation work. We also sell plants to raise money and to help make our island an inviting place for native birds and animals.

Indigiscapes visit
We are very lucky here in the Redlands to have Indigiscapes, which has a wonderful native nursery under the expert guidance of Ben Webb. Ben welcomed Nursery members last week to see a bigger nursery in operation, learn new skills and bring home a few additions for our own gardens..
Winter Colour
The Nursery has a number of Wikstroemia indica (Bushman's bootlace) plants for sale. The specimen in the photograph is in one of the Bushcare blocks on Main Beach. The berries bring some brightness to the winter garden but they are toxic. It is a hardy small shrub, with fibrous bark, which gives it its common name of Bushman's bootlace or Tie bush.

2024: a few figures
Last year the Nursery donated $3723.00 worth of plants to community groups. Nursery members donated approximately $22, 933.00 worth of volunteer hours on collecting seed and cuttings, propagating, working on our display garden, selling our plants at the markets and opshop, administration and collecting essential supplies from the mainland.

Display Garden

Nursery members had a happy surprise when they found this Shepherd's crook orchid (Geoedorum densiflorum) growing in the nursery grounds. It is a terrestrial orchid that pops up around Coochie and grows in a wide range of habitats. Because of its tiny size, it is vulnerable to being swamped by weeds. We will try growing it from seed, once the pods develop.
