The bush regeneration contractors have finished their work on our Morwong Beach block, but they've left the most picturesque strip for us to weed.
Full disclosure - there's more weeds than the one in the foreground!

2025 May & June Report

Better late than never...

This (short) report for May and June is itself about catching-up after disruptions to our regular monthly work plan. Just for the record, our March 15th morning was blown away by Alfred until the 22nd. To avoid Easter we brought April’s Saturday back to the 12th (cancelled - rain), postponed it to the 26th (cancelled - rain) which took us to 16th May (cancelled - rain) postponed to June 21st (cancelled - rain).

The good news was our pop-up on Monday 16th June. It was so well attended, and we gave D Block’s corky passion and mile-a-minute a real seeing to. The gods smiled on us again on Saturday 28th when we finally got back on the job with a further assault on the D Block weeds, ramped up by the months of… rain. Here’s the data on the fickle weather from the Bureau of Meteorology's gauge on Banana Bank, with rain stats from Coochiemudlo resident Tim Herse. Thanks to both.

There’s more disruption this month. Flinders Day has been moved from Sunday to Saturday 19th July, which is our scheduled date. So, again, we will have to postpone to Saturday 26th this month. The exciting upside is that we'll be embarking on a new Bushcare venture, focused on C Block, at the eastern end of Morwong Beach.

Our conservation grant from council was spent on the intense weeding of C Block by contract regenerators who completed their work on July 2nd. The great reduction in the sheer mass of weeds on the site is our opportunity to turn it into a regeneration showcase over the next few years. The Council's Bushcare officers have promised us a lot of support along the way, with advice and hands-on help.

So, on Saturday 26th of July we’ll meet at the block, and get started on the north-east corner of the site, close to the beach - a delightful setting for our morning’s work.  We've noticed, close by, how the contractors, wind up the invasive vines as they weed and leave them to wilt away on tree branches. Quicker and easier than bagging them.

Let's hope for a sunny morning on the foreshore. With the year almost half over we're due for a clear run, and clearer skies, though the months ahead.
